This painting is catalogued as "Landscape Lottery #3b", and I have to admit that I chose this view after visiting the site of the previous painting, GPS point #3, and becoming frustrated with the challenge of responding to an empty wash when I knew there was so much nice scenery around. One of the points of the Landscape Lottery project is to see how well I can put aside my own preferences and work with subject matter chosen at random. However, even though I designed the project, I often find it more frustrating than fun. Some days, after working in the assigned location, I then head off to find another place to paint, one with which I feel a reassuringly strong rapport. In this case it was a view from the Catalina Highway. Stangely, I ended up preferring the painting of the wash, glad I'd spent time there.
